Kevin Kennon designed an advanced sustainable commercial building ‘Tian Fang’for Eco-City, Tianjin, China

An advanced sustainable commercial building ‘Tian Fang’ has been designed by the International Architect Kevin Kennon, for Eco-City, Tianjin, China. This mixed-use commercial building designed for area of 90,000 square meter, is a joint development between China and Singapore. It is a 200 meter tall office tower and luxury shopping center utilizing advanced Biophilic design technologies and strategies to reconnect people with nature. The principal strategy behind its advanced Biophilic design is to utilize natural convection to heat and cool the building with filtered fresh air.

The base of the Tian Fang is a 14x14 meter square module. Solar and wind studies influenced the site orientation and building massing, with approximately 50 atriums allowing green space and natural light to infiltrate the building. The Tian Fang has 18 corners, providing prime real estate in corner offices. The layout of the luxury retail, with fine international and Chinese cuisine on the top floor, also follows the module and is composed of 17 14x14 meter volumes which rise to become a series of distinctive angled roofs shaped at various orientations to the sun providing solar power. As the tower and the base are one, hence in between these roof forms are skylights which allow daylight to activate shopping.

The tower is developed by Tianjin Real Estate Development & Management Group, LTD with Beijing Victory Star Executive Architects. The design of Tian Fang tower incorporates algorithms that mimic the form and growth of bamboo forests. About 20% of clean energy of the tower is generated on site through a combination of hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels, and wind turbines conserving nearly 20% of the energy used. The dependence of Tian Fang on the grid is approximately 60% that of a similar fully occupied mixed-use tower. The tower will be completed in early of 2013. The goal of Tian Fang project is to present it a catalyst for green design considering pollution as a foremost challenge. The initiative is to perform tall building design in combination to environmental strategies and adaptive innovation to create signature architecture.
